Machine Embroidery Basics
#1 Read the manuals that came with the machine. This cannot be stressed enough since there is a wealth of information in the manuals. This includes a listing of all the designs which are built into your machine. If you cannot find your manuals, look at the FILE sections of this FB group. The manuals for both the Flourish II and Flare can be found there.

#2 Know where to find other sources of information. • Your local dealer: This is the most important resource. Most dealers will provide training and have events which help you learn more about using your machine. In addition, you need to know where to find a local dealer who can clean and service your machine. • Babylock.com: If you have a new machine, it should have come with an option to take on-line training via the Baby Lock website. The website also has information regarding the accessories available for your specific machine and support data. • YouTube: If you are a visual learner, YouTube has numerous videos which are helpful. Some are brand specific and some are project specific. Power Tools with Thread is one which comes highly recommended. • Facebook groups: And of course, Facebook had numerous groups regarding machine embroidery. This group has been set up specifically for our models of machines. The Flare replaced the Flourish II in 2021 with the new wireless option being the primary difference. Google: And of course, there are numerous websites containing information. One that you might find helpful as a beginner is listed below. https://www.digitizingmadeeasy.com/machine-embroidery-basics-for-beginners/

#3 Supplies Bobbin thread: It is recommended that you use 90 weights. You can wind your own or use prewound bobbins. Top thread: It is recommended that you use a 40-weight thread. As to the brand or type (polyester vs rayon), there are many different opinions. Many beginners have purchased sets of Brothread on Amazon and have been successful with it. This is an inexpensive option which provides you with a wide range of colors. Needles: The type of needle used will determine if your project is successful. If you primarily stitch on woven fabric, you will use a 75/11 sharp EMBROIDERY needle. Embroidery needles have a larger hole for the thread to pass through. If you have difficulty finding needles locally, look at Organ needles on Amazon. Use the below site to help determine the type of needed used for various fabrics. https://theembroiderycoach.com/embroidery-machine-needles/ Stabilizers: Embroidery stabilizer is the material that goes in your embroidery machine hoop underneath the item you intend to embroider. It “stabilizes” your fabric to ensure your machine stitches both accurately and efficiently. Below is an excellent site which provides detailed information regarding stabilizers. https://www.sewingmachinefun.com/machine-embroidery.../

Baby Lock Flourish or Flare machines use PES files. Also be certain to purchase from a reputable vendor! There are numerous scammers who are selling designs illegally. Fonts: A special type of file (BX) can be used with software to type out words and sayings. Embrilliance Express is a free software which is very popular. (https://embrilliance.com/) The user can format the words/saying using Embrilliance and save the final product as a PES file. This PES file can then be transferred to the machine to stitch out the design. Keep in mind that there are numerous options and opinions when it comes to machine embroidery. The key is to look at your available information and ask questions.

Fidget Blanket (Fummeldecke) Ideas

This will be my first time ever making a fidget blanket- I was so happy to have the opportunity today to gift my Oma a fidget blanket. I love her with all my heart, it just makes me so sad that not much can be done for her while struggling through dementia. She told me it was beautiful and she appeared to like it. I showed her each square and what she can do with it. The first thing she noticed was the wording; „Mit Liebe Gemacht“ which translates to „Made with love“.  Oma Hildegard is German and I wanted to make sure she would recognize things and always remember that we love her.  What is a Fidget Blanket? Fidget blankets are therapeutic small lap quilts to which different kinds of things are sewn or added on. These items offer sensory stimulation that can have a calming effect on patient who struggle with memory loss. The Fidget blankets help them stay busy avoiding boredom. It provides a means of performing repetitive behaviors that are often reassuring and calming. ...
