Charm Table Runner
Charm Table Runner
Supply List:
Basic sewing supplies, including a pencil or chalk for marking and applique
pins (optional)
Sewing machine in good working
order
Thread for top and bobbin
Five 5” squares for center
43 5’ squares for runner
Border and binding - contrasting to squares ¾ of a yard
Fabric for back approximately 2
yards.
Making the center is the fun part.
Lay out squares on point, with
three columns of five blocks, two columns of four blocks on each side of the
fives and ending with two columns of three blocks.
Make sure that your five center
blocks are in the center of this agreement.
Sew the squares together and press
seam allowance in one direction.
While this arrangement looks quite
nice, we need to add borders. In order to do that, trimming is necessary. Place
your ruler 1/4” up from the outside corners (to create the seam allowance for
the border) and trim off the excess fabric.
From your border fabric, cut four
strips 1-1/2” of WOF.
Cut into:
2 strips 34” long
2 strips 13” long
2 strips 15” long
Pin the 34” strips onto each long side
of the runner, matching the centers. There will be excess. Sew in place, press
and trim away the excess fabric on the ends, following the shape of the center
to guide you.
At one end of the runner, next sew
a 13” strip onto one of the short sides, aligning with the center point. Again,
press and trim. Repeat for the other end.
Now sew a 15” strip on the remain
short sides, pressing and trimming the excess.
For the outer border:
Take 14 of the remaining squares
and cut them into rectangles, 2-1/2” x 5”. Set aside four matching pairs to use
for the corners.
From one 5” square, cut out two
2-1/2” squares.
Sew together two sets of six
rectangles to be used on the long sides. On each end of these borders, sew a
different one of each of the set-aside rectangles. Press all seams in one
direction.
Find the center of the border
strip and match it to the center of the runner, pinning in place. Sew the
border strip to the runner and trim off the ends of the strip using the runner
shape as your guide. Repeat for the other side. Press seams towards the first
border.
Sew together two short strips
using two rectangles. Add one of your set-aside rectangles to one end of each.
Sew these to one short end of the
runner, matching the set-aside rectangles to each other. Press seam allowance
towards the first border and trim using the center as your guide.
Sew together two more sets of two
rectangles, adding the remaining two-set-aside rectangles to one end of each.
On the other end, after ensuring that the orientation is correct, sew one of
the 2-1/2” squares. Press all seems in one direction.
Pin these to the runner center,
aligning the squares with the previous short strip. Sew in place, press and
trim as before.
Finish as desired, using the
remaining first border fabric as binding.
