Vision and Dementia

5 Ways Vision Changes With Dementia 1. Blurring Blurring is when one sees things less sharply. Faces and common objects can become harder to recognize. Blurring can cause confusion and difficulty finding objects. Another challenge is not being able to read or write. Caregiver tips: Make it clear who you are when interacting with a person with dementia. For example, don’t say “it’s me.” Instead say “Hi Mom, it’s Bob, your son.” When you give your care partner an object, state what it is. Such as “here is your hairbrush.” 2. Pupils reacting slowly to light Slow reactions to light make it hard to go from a light space to a dark space. When a person with dementia turns from looking out a bright window the room will appear dark. Going outside on a sunny day can be overwhelming. The light appears too bright until the pupils react. Caregiver tips: Allow plenty of time to adjust to different levels of light. When waking up in the morning, keep the lights low. Turn on a small light first. Go sl...

Piper my beagle puppy

Welcome to my blog page. I started my blog in March 2017! I didn't realize that I have been blogging for that long already. I don't even remember why I started blogging. Maybe I started it after I broke my kneecap and was forced to stay home and heal for 6 months. That is how long it took for my kneecap to heal. It was a depressing year for me. I wasn't able to get around like I wanted to and had to depend on others for help. It was hard.  One of my first blogs was about my dog Piper. She's a sweetheart who loves tummy rubs and attention in all. Piper likes her pig ear snacks. For some reason, when one of my pups has something like a toy or bone, even a piece of trash, the other one wants the same thing. These two girls are precious, but they do not like to share.

Fun Quilt Challenge

Hello! Happy New Year Everyone! Welcome to 2026 and a new beginning of the Kathryn Kerr 365 Quilt Challenge!  This is a quick summary of how this works.  Please remember that the patterns are Kathryn’s original copyrighted patterns and we will make sure posts reflect that. Ask any questions you might have! And, please, find Kathryn’s donation link on her teachable site and send a “thank you” to the artist for her continued dedication to this project! Happy Sewing!  - The 365 Quilt Challenge gives you one block per day, with a few extras and a birthday block. If you finish a block each day, at the end of 2024, you will have a completed quilt.  - The final quilt, when completed will be 90” x 90”. - The patterns begin with easy blocks, and get more difficult as we progress through the year. (This was amazing to me as a new quilter!)  - Please look through the explanations of how to do certain things like mitered corners (you’re going to learn to love them) and fly...

Quilt Glossary

Quilt Glossary 1/4 seam allowance-A 1/4 seam allowance is a 1/4 inch of fabric between where your seam begins and the raw edge of the fabric. A quarter-inch allowance is used by quilters for most projects. Having an accurate seam allowance is necessary for making pieces that align properly when you assemble the quilt. Many sewing machines have settings or 1/4" presser feet to help you sew with an accurate seam allowance. If you don't have a 1/4" foot, using colored tape to mark the correct allowance on the throat plate of your machine can help you see the proper allowance more clearly. 1930s reproductions- 1930s reproductions are quilting materials produced today using patterns popular during the 1930s. Using 1930s reproductions can help you create a vintage or antique look while still using new, more easily sourced material. 1930s reproductions are also handy for repairing heirloom quilts or finish quilts that have been handed down in-progress. Some popular 1930s repro...
